Step 5: The 5 Senses Poem

A five senses poem describes something only by what it would smell like, sound like, taste like, look like, and feel like. This does not have to be literal. It's poetry. 

For Example:

My Car

My car sounds like a robot. 

It smells like tough, taut, leather.

It feels like a favorite pair of jeans. 

My car looks like a shiny, silver bullet

and it smells like savings. 

As you can see I like my car. Your topic for this poem is your country. After you have researched your country you should be able to tell me what you think it would "smell", "sound", "taste", "look", and "feel" like. 

*We will be working on our poems on Tuesday in class.

The map is easy. Simply draw or print out a map, make it pretty, and then tell me where the country is in relation it's surroundings. I made a quick map for you as an example. 

Here it is!

Now to describe where the country is you have to answer the question "Donde esta?". Use your direction vocabulary that we have been studying to tell me in Spanish where your country is located. You can see that on my map I wrote "El Salvador esta..." at the top of the page and then I wrote where it is located according to all of the countries that surround El Salvador to the left. Include oceans or seas as well.

There is also a grammar mistake in my directions on the picture. Can you find it?

You can make a travel guide easily in Microsoft Publisher. This can also be accomplished on Word but Publisher has ready made templates. *Hint* You should work on this first since we are in the computer lab.

In your travel guide brochure you will need to include the following:

1. Name of country and the capitol.
2. Population
3. Major Exports
4. Monetary Unit (What is their money called?)
5. Historical Facts
6. Popular Tourist Destinations
7. Climate
8. Three photos of the country

For this project you will be making a "County in a Box".
Here is what you will need to do:

1. Find a box. You can use a shoe box, cereal box, pizza box, or anything that is boxlike in shape.

2. Decorate the box according to your country. You could put the name of the country, the flag, or pictures that represent the country on the outside of the box. Be creative!

3.  Inside the box you must include 8 items that represent your country. These items could be anything! For example; if the major export of your country is coffee, put a coffee been inside your box. Or if the national sport of your country is baseball then you could include a baseball.

4. There will be three little assignments also included inside of your box. You will need a map of the country with directions written, a 5 senses poem, and a travel guide. Look for instructions for these projects in Step 3, 4, and 5.
